The bracket is set, and it’s time to get to the action of the ROH Women’s Championship tournament. ROH has been slowly building back up their dead women’s division, and this tournament will crown a new champion at Death Before Dishonor this September. In professional wrestling, sometimes friendships will be put to the test in the ring. First round action in the ROH Women’s Championship tournament sees close friends Alex Garcia & Miranda Alize, with only one being able to progress further.
Pink Dream vs. Lucha Baddie
After Code of Honor would be adhered to, Alize would go behind and take Garcia down with a quick takedown. She wouldn’t follow up, instead letting her friend get back up. Garcia would take advantage by grabbing a wrist lock, sending Alize down to the mat shortly after. Clearly neither is a slouch in terms of grappling, but Alize would show why she’s known as the Lucha Baddie with a slick armdrag.
Gracia would come back with a heavy chop to the chest before springboarding off the top rope to set up a takedown, before Alize came back with a springboard armdrag. Alize would be taken back down by a flying headscissors, before taking Garcia down and offering her hand for another handshake. Garcia would take advantage with a headlock before being sent off the ropes, where she came back with a dropkick.
Alize went out to the floor, and Garcia would go for a springboard dive. However, she’d only find the floor as Alize calmly walked out of the way, causing quite the impact for Garcia. Friendship went out the window, as Alize without hesitation threw Garcia right into the barricade twice before a commercial break came along.
Miranda Alize Moves Forward
Back from the break, the action had found its way back into the ring. Both Gracia & Alize were on their knees as they fought back to their feet with some hard strikes. Alize would win out with a big headbutt, before Gracia slipped behind to nail a lungblower. The Pink Press would set up some big mounted punches, before Gracia nailed a lariat and a punt kick for a two count.
Going to the top rope, Gracia would look for a blockbuster off the top rope, and while she didn’t get all of it, Alize was downed for another two count. Back on her feet, Alize would get a two count off a roll up, before nailing a huge knee strike for a two count. Another big kick and a running cutter would set up The Drive By for the win.
You need to start a tournament off with a big match, and this one was fast paced from start to finish. Both Gracia & Alize were fantastic here, and deserve to be fixtures of this division. They set the bar for this tournament with this encounter, and now it’s time for everyone else to match it. All this one lacked was a bit more time, as just when things were heating up, it would be closed out. Match Rating: 3.25/5 (*** 1/2)
Miranda Alize will now go on to face the winner of Nicole Savoy vs. Mazzetti, will they be able to keep their winning ways going on this Quest For Gold? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
